Jewish Herald-Voice Project: Susanna Friedman

Jewish Herald-Voice Project

Since September 1908, Houston, Texas, has had a weekly newspaper which covers Jewish events in the Houston area and much of Texas. It has been published under several different names during this period, but has been the Jewish Herald-Voice for many years.

Volunteers from the Greater Houston Jewish Genealogical Society have been transcribing life-cycle event information from the microfilm of the Jewish Herald-Voice newspaper (and digital images on CD of those microfilms). The project began in 2001 and an index is being created from the beginning of the newspapaper in 1908. Volunteers have completed the years 1908 through December 2010, and are currently transcribing the first half of 2011. This searchable database on JewishGen is updated every six months.

If you are looking for family members in Texas or Houston, here's how to access information already in the database:

Also, many of the gravestone in Houston Jewish Cemeteries have been photographed and entered into http://www.findagrave.com/ by Lynna Kay Shuffield, who is responsible for registering the Jewish Cemeteries with and getting the State of Texas to designate them as Texas Historical Cemeteries.
